Description
Windows Media Video, or WMV, is a video compression format created by Microsoft in 2006 for storing and watching videos on Windows PCs. Many devices, including Archos, Microsoft Zune, Xbox 360, Windows Mobile phones, and others, support playback of WMVs, too. However, the WMV format is not widely supported on other platforms, so sometimes you might need to convert your files to open and play them correctly. To learn how to do this, read our guides.

Technical details
Videos of the WMV file type can be compressed with one of the following video codecs: WMV V7, WMV V8, WMV 9, WMV 9 Screen, WMV 9 Advanced profile, MPEG-4, or WMV 9.1 Image V2. Some files with WMV specifications support DRM (Digital Rights Management), making them extremely well-suited for selling video content online.
